THORNTON WILDER (1897 - 1975)

Thornton Niven Wilder was born in Madison, Wisconsin on April 17, 1897. His novel, "The Bridge of San Luis Rey" won the Pulitzer Prize in 1928. His play "Our Town" which was written in Peterborough, NH won the Pulitzer Prize for "Letters: Drama" in 1938. His play "The Skin of Our Teeth" won the same prize in 1943. The musical "Hello, Dolly" was based on his play "The Matchmaker."

I first discovered Thornton's work in about 1963 when the University of MO at Kansas City (then KCU) staged his play "The Skin of Our Teeth." Dory DeAngelo played the part of Sabina and I was completely thrilled with her performance, and the play. I wrote to Thornton Wilder and received a very nice letter back from his sister, Isabel. Thornton's signature was included in the note. I wrote a few other times and each time received a nice note back. I was very sad in 1975 when I heard that Thornton Wilder had died. I think he is one of the best writers of this century. Perhaps this web page will lead you to discover Thornton's genius for yourself. It has been online since 1995......Emily M. Parris
